Softball team headed to Nationals in Rochester, MN

 

Following a 19-3 season and winning the Region 3 B Championship on Saturday, the Hudson Valley Community College Vikings softball team is on its way to Rochester, Minnesota for the NJCAA National Tournament, which begins on Thursday, May 14.

This is only the second time in school history that the softball team has made Nationals.

Rossi, Mochrie, and Ford all made the All-Tournament Team, with Ford being named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. It was also announced that McDonnell, Shelby Fenton (Catholic Central/Troy), Mochrie, and Ford were named Second-Team All-Region.

The team defeated Genesee Community College (25-11) 16-5 in the final game of the Region 3 B Championship on Saturday. The Vikings split with Genesee on Friday winning game one 2-1 and then lost 8-7 in game two.

The Vikings fell behind 3-2 in the first inning of the final game, but a five-run third gave them a 7-3 lead en route to the 16-5 victory. Courtney McDonnell (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) led the Vikings with a triple, double, and three RBIs. Allison Ford (Mechanicville/Mechanicville), Hannah Hoffman (Averill Park/Wynantskill), and Brittany Ubrich (Mechanicville/Mechanicville) each added two hits, while Ford picked up the win on the mound.

In game one on Friday, Ford pitched nine dominating innings, allowing only one run which was unearned. It wasn’t until the top of the ninth when Hannah Mochrie (Colonie/Colonie) hit her eighth homerun of the season to break the 1-1 tie, giving the Vikings a 1-0 series lead.

The Vikings turned around and gave up a 6-0 lead in game two. Hudson Valley trailed 8-6 in the seventh and scored early to put them within one, but they stranded a runner on third to end the game. Jackie Rossi (Shaker/Latham) led the team with three hits in the loss.
